Sumario:At the beginning of the Colonial period in Mexico, the smelting of minerals with gold and silver was used in order to obtain them as metals; in this pyrometallurgical process the ore grounded is mixed with minerals of lead (litharge) and other salts; once the mineral is melted, the elements of interest are separated and the residues (slags) are discarded; the slags are composed mainly of Si, Fe, Ca, Pb and As, Cd, Cu, Zn and other elements in significant quantities. Metallurgical slags deposits have been identified and studied in several regions of San Luis Potosí. In this work, are presented the results obtained in the chemical (ICP-MS) and mineralogical (Scanning Electronic Microscopy) characterization of a series of slags deposits located in Cerro de San Pedro, san Luis Potosí, Mexico, in order to evaluate different ways to use them.
