The Volcán, a Magmatic Iron Deposit in NW Mexico: Distribution and General Characteristics

The majority of iron deposits in Sonora are associated with skarn zones and/or replacements related to intrusive bodies of granodiorite-quartz monzonite compositions, not greater than 5 Mt and grades less than 50% total Fe. Unlike these deposits, there is the presence of iron deposits whose geologic...

Unlike these deposits, there is the presence of iron deposits whose geological characteristics, alteration-mineralization styles and tectonic context, seem to be associated with magmatic processes, which can be classified as IOCG deposits of the iron-apatite type. A typical example of this type is El Volcán, a deposit of ~ 24 Mt of Fe, with an average grade of 40 to 60% Fe. This type of mineral deposit could extend to the western side of Mexico, which represents new opportunities for exploration of this type of deposits.
