The Magical Towns program was instituted in 2001 by the federal government through SECTUR with the intention of contributing "to revalue a set of populations in the country that have always been in the collective imagination of the nation as a whole and that represent fresh and different alternatives for national and foreign visitors." (Magical Towns Program, SECTUR, 2012).Xico, Veracruz, is a town with a lot of colonial and provincial charm. The native peoples called the place Xiko-chimal-ko, from Nahuatl: "where there are honeycombs of yellow wax", or in the "Nest of the xicotes". (SECTUR 2012) The program of magical towns exists in order to revalue the populations of the country, the concept of "magical town" could work as a tourist strategy, but if it is not given a constant renovation or new attractions and generates tourism, this town could lose its appointment. El programa de Pueblos Mágicos, fue instituido en 2001 por el gobierno federal a través de SECTUR con la intención de contribuir “a revalorar a un conjunto de poblaciones del país que siempre han estado en el imaginario colectivo de la nación en su conjunto y que representan alternativas frescas y diferentes para los visitantes nacionales y extranjeros.” (Programa Pueblos Mágicos, SECTUR, 2012). Xico, Veracruz, es un pueblo con mucho encanto colonial y de provincia. Los pueblos nativos llamaban al lugar Xiko-chimal-ko, del Náhuatl: “en donde hay panales de cera amarilla”, o en el “Nido de los xicotes”. (SECTUR 2012) El programa de pueblos mágicos existe con el fin de revalorar a las poblaciones del país, el concepto de “pueblo mágico” podría funcionar como una estrategia turística, pero sino se le da una constate renovación o nuevos atractivos y genere turismo, este pueblo podría perder su nombramiento.
